Your Diet Matters!

Get into the right habits now.

Your diet and food choices are so important when preparing for and recovering from surgery.  Food is medicine! Even simple changes to your diet can reduce inflammation in your body and help you lose a few pounds.

Simple changes such as eating more whole foods, avoiding highly processed foods, and substituting fish instead of red meat. A proactive approach to your diet can make a difference in your wound healing, reducing problems with anesthesia, and reducing your risk of blood clots.

Furthermore, if you want to reduce the impact that the extra weight has on your joints, these small but effective changes in your diet may help you to begin losing some weight.

In our practice, we guide our patients toward healthy food choices. If weight loss is required before your surgeon performs surgery, consider seeing a registered dietician or nutritionist.

Better diet choices may also have a direct effect on your blood sugar. If you have diabetes, you probably already know that your wounds heal much slower. Healthy healthy food choices combined with your medication will help keep your blood sugar in check and help you heal faster.

Elevated blood sugar, called hyperglycemia, is the dangerous condition which also causes immune system deficiency, poor circulation, and diabatic neuropathy.  Even if don’t have diabetes, it is important to control your blood sugar before and after your surgical procedure.  If you're not controlling your sugar as good as you should be, well this is the time to start!

If you need more help, I highly recommend consulting with a registered dietician prior to surgery.
